Meaning

Heliotrope, also known as 'blood jasper,' is a variety of chalcedony characterized by its greenish base color with red inclusions of iron oxide. It is said to help its wearer better define boundaries and ward off unwanted influences. It supports one's control and the ability to quickly adapt to new, unforeseen situations. It is also said to protect against nightmares during sleep and stimulate dream activity.

Alleged effect

Heliotrope, known as the "flu stone," is said to be placed on the thymus gland for an immune-boosting effect during the onset of infections. It is said to stimulate lymph flow and metabolism, as well as reduce pus formation. Since it is also said to have detoxifying properties, this stone is particularly suitable for use in spa treatments.

Mineralogie & Entstehung

Heliotrope is a dark green variety of chalcedony (microcrystalline quartz, SiO₂) with red spots of iron oxide (hematite). The green base color is created by finely distributed chlorite or hornblende inclusions. It forms in volcanic rocks. Important locations include India, Brazil, Australia, China, and the USA.

Pflege & Reinigung

With a Mohs hardness of 6.5–7, heliotrope is robust. Clean under running water, recharge on hematite or in the sun. It is suitable for everyday use and easy to care for.

Verwechslungsgefahren & Qualität

Heliotrope is sometimes confused with green jasper or moss agate. The distinguishing feature is the typical red spots on a dark green background. Without red spots, it is green chalcedony or plasma. In trade, it is reliably named, and fakes are rare.
