Meaning

The typical shimmer is an optical phenomenon caused by light refraction on the mineral structures within the stone and usually exhibits blue, green, or golden shimmers. In healing stone science, it is said to be an "illusion buster," making our goals and intentions clear. It is also said to help us revive forgotten memories and feelings and approach things with more imagination.

Alleged effect

Labradorite is said to be supportive in cases of rheumatic diseases and gout, and can also improve sensitivity to cold. It is said to enhance intuition and reveal psychic abilities. When one is short of ideas, it is said to stimulate creativity and awaken childlike enthusiasm.

Mineralogie & Entstehung

Labradorite belongs to the plagioclase feldspar group and exhibits the characteristic labradorescence – an intense play of colors ranging from blue, green, gold, and orange, created by light refraction at thin lamellae within the crystal. It was first described in 1770 on the Labrador Peninsula (Canada).

Pflege & Reinigung

Clean with lukewarm water and a soft cloth. Mohs hardness of 6.5 and cleavage mean that impacts should be avoided. Recharge in moonlight or on rock crystal. Sunlight is harmless for a short time, but prolonged exposure can dull the surface.

Verwechslungsgefahren & Qualität

Often sold as "rainbow moonstone" – the correct name is labradorite. Spectrolite from Finland shows the complete color spectrum and is the most valuable variety. Matte pieces without color play are ordinary feldspar, not genuine labradorite.
