Meaning

Carnelian is an iron-rich chalcedony, which gives it its reddish-brown-orange color. In healing stone science, it is considered a stone with a hemostatic effect. A tumbled stone in the hand is said to be helpful for nosebleeds, as well as for periodontal disease or bleeding gums, where it is said to have a supportive effect.

Alleged effect

Carnelian is said to give its wearer courage and steadfastness, especially in everyday tasks. It is also said to enhance problem-solving skills and promote good humor. Due to its supposed ability to support blood circulation to the organs, it is also attributed a passion-inspiring and romantic effect.

Mineralogie & Entstehung

Carnelian is an orange-red to brown-red variety of chalcedony (microcrystalline quartz, SiO₂). Its color is due to finely distributed iron oxide. It forms in volcanic rocks and sediments. Many carnelians are intensified by heating – this practice has been known since antiquity and is accepted in trade. Important locations include India, Brazil, Uruguay, Madagascar, and Botswana.

Pflege & Reinigung

Carnelian has a Mohs hardness of 6.5–7 and is robust. Clean under running water, recharge in the sun (enhances the color). It is one of the easiest healing stones to care for and can be worn without worry in everyday life.

Verwechslungsgefahren & Qualität

Carnelian is sometimes confused with red jasper. The difference: Carnelian is translucent, while jasper is opaque. Sard (dark brown chalcedony) is also related but darker. Many carnelian stones on the market are dyed by heating – this is a traditional, accepted treatment and does not diminish the quality.
