Meaning

The unique combination of black tourmaline and rock crystal is valued for both its visual beauty and its symbolic significance, as it combines clarity (quartz) and protection (tourmaline). Tourmaline quartz thus combines the purported effects of both stones in one. Visually, it embodies the principle of yin and yang and is said to promote inner harmony and balance.

Alleged effect

Tourmaline quartz is said to promote a sense of serenity. Similar to black tourmaline, it is considered a protective stone, protecting against negative energies and helping to identify false friends and unfaithful people. It is also said to have a supportive effect on sciatica and lumbago.

Mineralogie & Entstehung

Tourmaline quartz is a rock crystal (SiO₂) with needle-like inclusions of black tourmaline (schorl, NaFe₃Al₆(BO₃)₃Si₆O₁₈(OH)₄). The tourmaline needles were included during the growth of the quartz crystal. It occurs in pegmatites and hydrothermal veins. Locations include Brazil, Madagascar, India, Nepal, and Switzerland.

Pflege & Reinigung

With a Mohs hardness of 7, tourmaline quartz is robust and easy to care for. Cleaning under running water, recharging in the sun or on rock crystal. It is practical for everyday use and uncomplicated.

Verwechslungsgefahren & Qualität

Tourmaline quartz can be confused with rutilated quartz — the difference is the black (instead of golden) needles. Sagenite (similar needle inclusions) can also look similar. However, the combination of clear quartz and black needles is very characteristic.
