Meaning

Due to its balancing properties, amazonite is said to help harmonize mood swings. Negative emotions such as grief, anxiety, or the feeling of being at the mercy of an overwhelming fate are particularly said to be resolved. This could help the wearer become more active and experience more joy in life through increased vitality.

Alleged effect

Amazonite is said to have soothing effects due to its relaxing, balancing, and antispasmodic properties. Placing amazonite under the pillow is said to promote deeper sleep and provide support for menstrual cramps or during childbirth. It may also provide relief from headaches.

Mineralogie & Entstehung

Amazonite is a green to blue-green variety of feldspar (microcline). Its characteristic color arises from traces of lead and water in the crystal lattice. It crystallizes in the triclinic system and often forms large, well-formed crystals. Chemically, it is a potassium aluminum silicate (KAlSi₃O₈). The main locations are in Russia (Ilmen Mountains), Brazil, India, the USA (Colorado, Virginia), and Madagascar.

Pflege & Reinigung

Amazonite has a Mohs hardness of 6–6.5 and should be protected from impacts and scratches. Cleaning under running lukewarm water is ideal. Direct sunlight for extended periods should be avoided, as the color may fade. To recharge, it is suitable to place it on an amethyst geode or rock crystal cluster. Saltwater and chemical cleaners can damage the surface and should be avoided.

Verwechslungsgefahren & Qualität

Amazonite is often confused with turquoise, as both can exhibit a similar green-blue color. However, turquoise is opaque and often shows a network-like pattern. Chrysocolla can also look similar but is significantly softer. Occasionally, dyed howlite is sold as an imitation of amazonite. Genuine amazonite shows a fine white grid structure on the surface upon closer inspection.
