Meaning

Amber is fossilized tree resin known for its warm color and its use as a decorative and healing stone. It has always been considered a particularly lucky stone and is especially known as a stone of optimism. It is said to bestow its wearer with a zest for life, a carefree spirit, and self-belief. It is said to have positive effects on depression and anxiety and contribute to a more active, vibrant appearance.

Alleged effect

As early as the Middle Ages, amber was said to have positive effects on liver, gallbladder, and metabolic diseases. It is also said to be helpful for joint pain and to support cartilage development. It is also said to be helpful for small children during teething.

Mineralogie & Entstehung

Amber is not a mineral in the strict sense but fossilized tree resin that formed 30–50 million years ago (in the Eocene). It mainly consists of carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen with varying composition. Amber can contain inclusions of insects, plant parts, and air bubbles that have been preserved for millions of years. The most famous amber comes from the Baltic Sea coast (Baltic amber), with additional deposits found in the Dominican Republic, Myanmar, and Mexico.

Pflege & Reinigung

With a Mohs hardness of only 2–2.5, amber is very soft and sensitive. It should be protected from scratches, heat, chemicals, and perfume. Clean only with a soft, slightly damp cloth. Ultrasound, steam, and acids should be strictly avoided. Amber is best stored in a soft fabric bag, separate from other jewelry. For charging, lukewarm water or moonlight is suitable.

Verwechslungsgefahren & Qualität

Amber has many imitations: opals (young, not fully fossilized resin), pressed amber (melted small pieces), synthetic resin, and even colored glass. Genuine amber is very light (it floats in saturated saltwater), feels warm to the touch, and develops a resinous scent when rubbed. The saltwater test is the simplest authenticity test: amber floats, plastic sinks.
