Meaning

Amethyst is said to promote sustained mental alertness and a deeper sense of spirituality. This may strengthen judgment and support honesty and sincerity. In many cultures, amethyst has been used to combat nightmares, possibly due to its ability to promote lucid dreaming and clarify inner imagery. An amethyst under the pillow or a geode in the bedroom is said to promote a more conscious experience of dreams.

Alleged effect

Amethyst is said to have a clarifying and detoxifying effect, which can promote concentration and conscious processing of thoughts. For this reason, it is often used as a "touchstone" or to assist in dealing with grief and sadness. It is also said to help one more easily let go of addictive behaviors and uncontrolled actions.

Mineralogie & Entstehung

Amethyst is the violet variety of quartz (SiO₂, Mohs hardness 7). Its color is caused by iron trace elements and natural gamma radiation. The crystals form hydrothermally in cavities of volcanic rocks and grow into clusters and geodes over millions of years. Main occurrences are Brazil, Uruguay (highest quality), and Zambia. Special feature: At 400–500 °C, amethyst transforms into citrine – therefore, most "citrines" on the market are actually heated amethysts.

Pflege & Reinigung

Discharge under running cold water or with hematite tumbled stones. Recharge in moonlight or on a rock crystal cluster – do not place in direct sunlight, as amethyst fades under UV exposure. Clean with lukewarm water and a soft cloth. Avoid heat above 300 °C (windowsill in direct sunlight, near radiators), as this can permanently change the color.

Verwechslungsgefahren & Qualität

Burnt amethysts are often sold as inexpensive "citrine" (vivid orange instead of naturally light yellow). Synthetic amethyst is hardly distinguishable from natural stone without a lab – therefore, we only work with long-established suppliers. Violet fluorite looks similar but is softer (Mohs hardness 4). Quality levels: "Deep Russian" (deepest violet, very rare), "Siberian" (historical top quality), "Rose de France" (delicate lilac).
