Meaning

Aquamarine is said to promote intuition and support mediumship and clairvoyance. It is also said to bestow foresight and forward-thinking action on its wearer. This may make it easier to complete newly started or unfinished tasks quickly and successfully, which can lead to a pleasant flow.

Alleged effect

In gemstone healing, aquamarine is considered a stone that can strengthen eyesight, especially in cases of farsightedness and nearsightedness. It is also said to support allergic reactions by helping to regulate overreactions of the immune system. This can help with hay fever and autoimmune diseases. Its harmonizing properties are also valued, as it is said to help balance hormones, especially thyroid hormones.

Mineralogie & Entstehung

Aquamarine is a blue to blue-green variety of the mineral beryl with the chemical formula Be₃Al₂Si₆O₁₈. Its color is due to traces of iron (Fe²⁺). It crystallizes in the hexagonal system and often forms large, prismatic crystals – the largest aquamarine crystal ever found weighed over 110 kg. The main locations are Brazil (Minas Gerais), Pakistan, Madagascar, Nigeria, and Mozambique. Deep blue specimens are referred to as "Santa Maria" aquamarines and are particularly valuable.

Pflege & Reinigung

With a Mohs hardness of 7.5–8, aquamarine is a robust gemstone. It can be cleaned under running water and charged in the morning sun. Prolonged direct sunlight should be avoided, as it can lighten the color in some specimens. Ultrasonic cleaning is usually unproblematic, provided the stone has no inclusions or cracks.

Verwechslungsgefahren & Qualität

Aquamarine can be confused with blue topaz, blue apatite, or light sapphire. Blue topaz is usually more intensely colored due to irradiation, while natural aquamarine tends to appear delicate and pastel-like. In the lower price segment, colored glass or synthetic spinel is occasionally sold as aquamarine. Genuine aquamarine often shows a slight greenish tint and characteristic clarity.
