Goldstone is not a natural mineral but a man-made glass. It consists of melted quartz sand mixed with copper oxide. During controlled cooling, tiny copper flakes crystallize, creating the characteristic golden sparkle. The brown base color also comes from the copper. It is primarily produced in Italy and China today. The blue variant (blue goldstone) contains cobalt instead of copper.

Verwechslungsgefahren & Qualität

Goldstone is always synthetic. It is sometimes mistakenly sold as sunstone, which is a natural feldspar with a similar sparkle. There are also optical similarities with brown aventurine. The very uniform, intense sparkle is the most reliable distinguishing feature for goldstone – natural stones always show a more uneven shimmer.
