Meaning

In crystal healing, garnet is considered a crisis stone. It is said to provide courage, confidence, and hope in hopeless situations when worldviews collapse. It is said to be able to dissolve unnecessary inhibitions and taboos. It is also said to promote a balanced, active sexuality and provide support in cases of age-related loss of libido.

Alleged effect

Garnet is said to stimulate the body's self-healing and regenerative powers in general, and to strengthen the heart in particular. It is also said to stimulate the metabolism and support the immune system. Furthermore, it is said to inspire new ideas and provide the strength to implement them.

Mineralogie & Entstehung

Garnet is a mineral group with the general formula X₃Y₂(SiO₄)₃. The most well-known representatives are pyrope (red), almandine (dark red), grossular (green/orange), and spessartine (orange). It crystallizes in the cubic system and often forms rhombododecahedral crystals. The red color of the most common varieties comes from iron and chromium. Locations include India, Sri Lanka, Czech Republic (Bohemian garnet), Brazil, Madagascar, and East Africa.

Pflege & Reinigung

Garnet has a Mohs hardness of 6.5–7.5 depending on the variety and is robust. Clean under running water, recharge in sunlight or on hematite. It is heat and light resistant. Ultrasonic cleaning should be avoided for specimens containing inclusions.

Verwechslungsgefahren & Qualität

Red garnet can be confused with ruby, spinel, or red tourmaline. Ruby is harder (9) and more expensive. Dyed glass is also occasionally sold as garnet. Bohemian garnet (pyrope) is particularly valued – glass imitations can be recognized by the lack of fire and uniform color.
