Meaning

Chrysocolla is known for its striking blue and green hues, often reminiscent of turquoise water. It is considered a stone that supports the pursuit of goals even under difficult circumstances. It is said to enhance the ability for self-observation and the acceptance of unexpected situations. It is said to help one remain neutral and clear-headed without becoming sluggish, nervous, or overstimulated.

Alleged effect

Chrysocolla is said to help its wearer with infections of the tonsils and throat area. It is said to have fever-reducing, antispasmodic, and relaxing properties, which can have a positive effect on menstrual cramps or stress-related digestive disorders. It is also said to have a detoxifying and strengthening effect on the liver.

Mineralogie & Entstehung

Chrysocolla is a hydrous copper-aluminum silicate with the formula (Cu,Al)₂H₂Si₂O₅(OH)₄. It forms as a secondary mineral in the oxidation zone of copper deposits. Its color ranges from turquoise blue to green to blue-green, depending on the copper content. It is often associated with malachite, azurite, or turquoise. Important locations include Peru, Chile, Congo, USA (Arizona), and Israel (Eilat stone).

Pflege & Reinigung

Chrysocolla is very soft and sensitive, with a Mohs hardness of 2–4. It must be handled carefully — no ultrasound, no acids, no saltwater. Clean only with lukewarm water and a soft cloth. To recharge, moonlight is suitable. Since chrysocolla can be porous, it should not be left in water for long periods. Not suitable for gemstone water.

Verwechslungsgefahren & Qualität

Chrysocolla is often confused with turquoise, which shows a similar color but is harder. Amazonite and larimar can also look similar. The "Eilat stone" from Israel is a natural mixture of chrysocolla, malachite, and turquoise. Occasionally, dyed howlite is offered as a chrysocolla imitation in trade.
