Meaning

Chrysoprase is said to help shift attention from negative thought and behavior patterns to positive ones. It is also said to strengthen the sense of being part of a greater whole. It is also said to help recognize selfish motives in thought and action and examine whether these are in line with higher ideals. Furthermore, chrysoprase is said to promote a sense of aesthetics and art.

Alleged effect

Physically, chrysoprase is said to have a detoxifying effect on poorly soluble substances, heavy metals, and drug residues. It is said to stimulate liver function, which can also indirectly be helpful for skin diseases. It is also said to support sexual problems and promote female fertility.

Mineralogie & Entstehung

Chrysoprase is an apple-green variety of chalcedony (microcrystalline quartz, SiO₂). Its color is due to finely distributed nickel silicate inclusions. It crystallizes trigonal and forms in weathered nickel deposits. The best qualities come from Australia (Queensland), Poland (Silesia), Tanzania, Brazil, and the USA. Australian chrysoprase is particularly intensely colored.

Pflege & Reinigung

With a Mohs hardness of 6.5–7, chrysoprase is relatively robust. Clean under running water. Important: Chrysoprase should NOT be charged in sunlight, as UV light can permanently lighten the color. Moonlight or rock crystal are ideal for recharging. Prolonged dryness can also lead to color loss — occasional moistening keeps the color fresh.

Verwechslungsgefahren & Qualität

Chrysoprase is sometimes confused with jade, as both can be apple green. However, jade has a different luster and higher density. There are also similarities with green aventurine — this, however, shows the typical aventurescence sparkle. Dyed chalcedony or glass is occasionally offered as a chrysoprase imitation. Genuine quality shows a uniform, bright green color.
