Mineralogie & Entstehung

Dumortierite is an aluminum borosilicate with the formula Al₇(BO₃)(SiO₄)₃O₃. It crystallizes in the orthorhombic system and forms fibrous to prismatic crystals. Its color ranges from blue to violet-blue to brown. It forms in aluminum-rich metamorphic rocks. Locations include Brazil, Madagascar, Sri Lanka, Namibia, France, and the USA (Nevada).

Pflege & Reinigung

With a Mohs hardness of 7–8, dumortierite is very robust and suitable for everyday use. Cleaning under running water is unproblematic. Recharge on rock crystal or in the morning sun. It is light- and chemical-resistant – one of the easiest gemstones to care for.

Verwechslungsgefahren & Qualität

Dumortierite is often confused with sodalite or lapis lazuli. Sodalite shows typical white veins, while lapis lazuli often contains golden pyrite inclusions. Dumortierite has a more fibrous luster and a more uniform blue color. Blue quartz can also look similar but is lighter and milkier.
