In particular, it is said to strengthen the heart, stimulate the liver, and provide support for rheumatic complaints. It is also said to improve eyesight.

Mineralogie & Entstehung

Emerald is a green variety of beryl (Be₃Al₂Si₆O₁₈) – and thus a relative of aquamarine. Its green color arises from traces of chromium and/or vanadium. It crystallizes in the hexagonal system. Emeralds are almost always filled with inclusions ("Jardin"), which are considered signs of authenticity. The most valuable emeralds come from Colombia (Muzo, Chivor), but Zambia, Brazil, Ethiopia, and Afghanistan are also significant sources.

Pflege & Reinigung

Emerald has a Mohs hardness of 7.5–8, but due to its inclusions, it is brittle and sensitive to impact. No ultrasonic cleaning! Clean only with lukewarm water. Many emeralds are treated with oil or resin to make the inclusions less visible – acids and heat can dissolve this filling.

Verwechslungsgefahren & Qualität

Emerald can be confused with green tourmaline, tsavorite (green garnet), chrome diopside, or green glass. Genuine emeralds almost always show inclusions – a "perfectly" clear green stone is likely synthetic. Synthetic emeralds (Chatham, Gilson) have been widely available since the 1960s.
