Meaning

Shungite consists primarily of carbon and is known for its special properties, including its ability to purify water. The stone has a long history and is often associated with healing and protective properties. It is also said, like rock crystal, to enhance the effects of other stones.

Alleged effect

Shungite is often used as protection against electromagnetic radiation and, like tourmaline, is considered a powerful protective stone that absorbs negative energies. Its wearer is also said to find it easier to make decisions and encourage them to seek out new experiences and venture off the beaten track.

Mineralogie & Entstehung

Shungite is a unique carbon-rich rock from Karelia (Russia) that is about 2 billion years old. It contains natural fullerenes (C₆₀ molecules) and consists of 30–98% carbon. Only the high-purity "noble shungite" exhibits a metallic luster.

Pflege & Reinigung

Clean under running water. Shungite is relatively soft (hardness 3.5) and can bleed color – use a dark surface when cleaning. To charge, place it in the sun or on rock crystal. For gemstone water, only use polished shungite.

Verwechslungsgefahren & Qualität

Noble shungite (deep black, metallic luster) is significantly rarer and more expensive than regular shungite (matte black). Confusion with coal or anthracite is possible – genuine shungite is heavier and conducts electricity, which is a simple authenticity test.
