Meaning

Smoky quartz is considered a classic "anti-stress" stone, which, when worn for extended periods, is said to strengthen resistance to stress. It is said to increase resilience in difficult times and help endure suffering and stress more easily. When work needs to be done, this stone is valued as a good companion. It is also said to promote realistic, pragmatic thinking and enhance concentration.

Alleged effect

Smoky quartz is said to have pain-relieving and antispasmodic properties. It can calm the nerves and provide relief from back pain. It is also said to provide relief from radiation damage.

Mineralogie & Entstehung

Smoky quartz is a brown to black-brown variety of quartz (SiO₂). The color is caused by natural irradiation of aluminum traces in the crystal lattice. It crystallizes in the trigonal system. Very dark specimens are referred to as morion. Caution: Many smoky quartz stones available on the market are artificially irradiated. Natural locations include Switzerland (Alps), Brazil, Madagascar, Scotland, and the USA.

Pflege & Reinigung

With a Mohs hardness of 7, smoky quartz is robust and easy to care for. Clean under running water. Important: Do not store it in direct sunlight for long periods – UV radiation can lighten the color. Recharge on rock crystal or in moonlight.

Verwechslungsgefahren & Qualität

Smoky quartz can be confused with smoky obsidian or brown tourmaline. Many "natural" smoky quartz stones on the market are artificially irradiated – they are often more evenly colored than natural specimens. Natural smoky quartz often shows uneven color distribution with lighter and darker zones.
