It forms in volcanic rocks. Locations include Brazil, India, Madagascar, Uruguay, and Mexico.<br>

Onyx has a Mohs hardness of 6.5–7 and is robust. Clean under running water, recharge on hematite or in moonlight. Dyed onyx can fade slightly with prolonged sunlight – storing it in the dark is advisable.<br>

Black onyx is often confused with black obsidian or black tourmaline. Obsidian has a glassy luster, while tourmaline often shows fine striations. Almost all black onyx on the market is dyed – this has been common practice since ancient times and is not a quality defect. Naturally black onyx is extremely rare.<br>
