Meaning

Opal glass is not a healing stone in the traditional sense, as it is colored glass. Nevertheless, this imitation is attributed several positive properties. It is said to help overcome fears of contact and dissolve negative associations. It is also said to bring peace and balance to its wearer and strengthen a sense of community.

Alleged effect

Opal glass (also called opalite) is said to have a detoxifying effect on the body and support lymphatic drainage. It is also said to be helpful for eye problems or vision disorders. Users also report a positive effect on colds, especially chills.

Mineralogie & Entstehung

Opal glass is not a natural mineral but an industrially produced opalescent glass. It mainly consists of silicon dioxide, dolomite, and fluorite, which are melted at high temperatures. The opalescent effect arises from controlled devitrification – tiny crystallites scatter the light. It is mainly produced in China. Do not confuse it with real opal or opalite (a naturally occurring mineral).<br>

Pflege & Reinigung

Opal glass has a hardness of about 5–6. As a glass product, it is relatively easy to care for but sensitive to breakage. Clean under running water. There are no special restrictions regarding light or temperature, as it is artificial.

Verwechslungsgefahren & Qualität

Opal glass is often sold as "opal" or "moonstone" – but it is always synthetic. The even, milky-blue shimmer without any natural irregularities reveals its artificial origin. Genuine opal displays a play of colors, while genuine moonstone shows an adularescence effect with more depth. The low price is also a clue.
