Meaning

Like other obsidians, snowflake obsidian can enhance intuition and strengthen character. It is valued for bringing unused strengths and abilities to light. The wearer of this stone is also said to be inspired to harness these abilities and put them into action.

Alleged effect

Like black obsidian, snowflake obsidian has similar properties. This variety of obsidian is said to be particularly effective at stimulating circulation and can have a positive effect on cold feet and hands. It is also said to make the after-effects of excessive alcohol consumption easier to bear. Snowflake obsidian is also said to have antispasmodic properties for tension, particularly in the gastrointestinal tract.

Mineralogie & Entstehung

Snowflake obsidian is volcanic glass (like regular obsidian) with inclusions of cristobalite, a high-temperature modification of SiO₂. The white "snowflakes" form when the obsidian slowly begins to devitrify over geological time periods. It is found in volcanic regions: USA (Utah, Oregon), Mexico, Iceland, and Turkey.<br>

Pflege & Reinigung

Like obsidian, it has a Mohs hardness of 5–5.5. Clean under running water, recharge on hematite or in moonlight. Protect from impacts (risk of glass breakage). Sunlight is harmless.<br>

Verwechslungsgefahren & Qualität

Snowflake obsidian is easily identifiable by its unique black-and-white pattern. Confusions are rare. Occasionally, it is confused with spotted granite, which does not exhibit a glassy luster. Dalmatian stone has similar contrasts but in reverse (lighter background with dark spots).
