Meaning

Sodalite is known for its deep blue color and is valued both as a gemstone and in crystal healing. It is said to promote a clear sense of identity—that is, the awareness of who one is and what one does not want to be. Suppressed aspects of one's personality can be accepted, and it becomes easier to stand by one's own feelings. It is also said to stimulate the pursuit of truth and help one mentally let go of restrictive dogmas, laws, or rules.

Alleged effect

Sodalite is said to have a particularly positive effect on the throat, larynx, and vocal cords. It is said to be effective for hoarseness. It is also said to improve fluid absorption in the body.

Mineralogie & Entstehung

Sodalite is a sodium-aluminum-silicate with chlorine (Na₈(AlSiO₄)₆Cl₂). It crystallizes in the cubic system but rarely forms visible crystals – it usually occurs in massive form. Its color ranges from deep blue to violet-blue, often with white veins of calcite. It forms in alkali-rich magmatic rocks. Locations include Brazil, Canada, Namibia, India, and Afghanistan.

Pflege & Reinigung

Sodalite has a Mohs hardness of 5.5–6. Clean under running water. Direct sunlight can lighten the color – charging in moonlight or on rock crystal is recommended. Do not use acids (reacts with acid).

Verwechslungsgefahren & Qualität

Sodalite is often confused with lapis lazuli. The difference: lapis lazuli contains golden pyrite inclusions, while sodalite shows white calcite veins. Dumortierite and blue quartz can also look similar. Sodalite is reliably named in trade and is less expensive than lapis lazuli.
