What is Goldfluss? Mineralogy and origin

Honestly and directly: Goldfluss is not a natural mineral, but an artificially produced glass. It consists of molten quartz sand mixed with copper oxide. During very slowly controlled cooling, tiny copper flakes crystallize out — and these are exactly what create the dense, even sparkle.

The warm brown base color also comes from the copper. The well-known blue sister variant — Blaufluss — is made with cobalt instead of copper. With a hardness of 5 to 6, Goldfluss is softer than quartz and above all prone to breakage, like any glass.

The material is now produced mainly in Italy and China. Because the result visually resembles natural aventurine, it is also known in the trade as aventurine glass — in English-speaking countries Goldstone.

Meaning & history

Goldfluss was developed in the 17th century on the Venetian glass island of Murano — tradition credits the glassmaking family Miotti, who kept the recipe secret for generations. A charming workshop legend tells of monks who accidentally dropped copper shavings into the melt.

The name element “-fluss” refers to the molten flow during production, not to a body of water. For centuries, the sparkling glass was a precious jewelry material that could compete with genuine gemstones.
